Welcome to Ieodo, welcome to Jeju!
The southern waters of Jeju Island are a forward-looking international space towards the
world as a
sea-trade route for the Korean Peninsula, targeting the largest area. At the same
time, it is an area of
conflict where interests such as fishing rights, underwater resources,
and continental shelf development
may collide among countries.
At the center of this area is Ieodo.
Ieodo is the living space
for Jeju Islanders who have used the sea as their source of livelihood. It is our history and territory
as the "Island of Peace." Here, the dreams and wishes of the people of Jeju Island are still
alive. However, the waters of Ieodo are located within 200 nautical miles of China, making it a disputed
area where the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of both Korea and China overlap, and China has shown its
ambition whenever it has the opportunity. Recently, China has been threatening neighboring countries
with its increasing naval power, including aircraft carriers, in the issue of these waters.
This
fact emphasizes the urgency and importance of studying the problem of Ieodo. To study the issue of
Ieodo, we first need to accumulate academic data related to Ieodo and prepare our logic in various
fields such as law, system, culture, and history. In particular, in the process, we need to continuously
pay attention to the international maritime law nature and dynamic structure of the conflicting factors
of the Ieodo issue, and evolve a national discussion in response to it. We have been making our own
efforts from this perspective until now. The issue of Ieodo is based on uncertainty. This is not only an
element of anxiety but also a possibility for expectation and evolution.
Those who prepare
thoroughly and proactively will have a certain future. As a result, Ieodo will become a reality where we
sing and dance together, not just a "land of peace." We ask for your active participation and
suggestions. The Ieodo Research Society will join you in this effort.
Established in Jeju Island
in 2007, the Society of Ieodo Research conducts academic, educational, public relations, and knowledge-based
projects to promote the maritime history and culture among the people of Jeju Island and the significance of
the surrounding waters of Ieodo.
